Bit of a break from the electro now. I did an interview with Jack from Bombay Bicycle Club (BBC) ages ago and I can't believe its taken me this long to post it. I say an interview - I'll be honest, it was more a series of shoddy uninspiring questions that I thought might produce vaguely interesting responses. Jack's been good enough to reply so I thought I'd whack it up anyway.
BBC popped up a couple of years ago on my radar - an indie band with clearly a lot of talent for thier age and some really unique vocals. They have just finished thier A-levels and released "Evening Morning" which I think is a stunning track. Have a listen below then read what Jack had to say about making love, airfix planes and music. He's even put together a hypothetical mixtape for us but I don't have all the tracks so that bit is probably the most unprofessional piece of blogging you've ever seen.
Cassette Culture (CC): Are you enjoying touring at the moment?
Jack, Bombay Bicycle Club (JBBC): We only just got back, it was an interesting experience, i think we learnt alot.
CC: So where did the name 'Bombay Bicycle Club' come from?
JBBC: It's our favourite curry house.
CC: Are you good friends with any other bands? I see Cajun Dance Party feature on your MySpace page...
JBBC: We're friends with Cajun, but we are kind of socially retarded whenever we're together as a band.
CC: Do any of you have any other interesting hobbies aside from music?
JBBC: We like making love and making airfix planes.
CC: Are you still a fan of Bert Jansch and The Carter Family? Who else are you all listening to at the moment?
JBBC: Yes i am still a fan, right now i'm listening to lots of stuff on a label called Jahtari, which is like if king tubby used a laptop instead of his great mixing desk.
CC: Who writes the lyrics? Is there a particular process you go through when writing them?
JBBC: I write the lyrics, there is no process, it's usually just before we have to record them or play them live.
CC: What are your views on how the Internet is changing the way music is discovered and distributed? Good thing/bad thing?
JBBC: it means there are loads of terrible bands around. But it is amazing nonetheless.
CC: What's next for BBC? Are any of you planning to go to university?
JBBC: We all got offers from university, but we don't want to make any definate plans. Anything could happen.
And here's Bombay Bicycle Club's mixtape:
Our mixtape is called "Can't get enough of your ass-thetics"
1. mr scruff - fish
2. madlib - dear god
3. dodos - god?
4. dirty projectors - rise above
5. fanzine - tonight
6. bass clef - cannot be straightened
7. metronomy - trick or treatz
8. yo la tengo - the story of yo la tengo
