Fan Death

Sounds Like: The start of the festival

I'm not sure how I missed out on these two last year. Fan Death are a superbly named duo consisting of Dandilion Wind Opaine and Marta Jaciubek-McKeever. Yes - I don't know if they're their real names... maybe some people just strike lucky. They sound a little bit like Glass Candy so give them a try if you like that kind of thing.

This is their most well-known track (Erol Alkan's remixed it too) Veronicas Veil - a violin charged, cascading electro affair of mighty proportions.

Oh come on this is just incredible! Yes its been around for a while but its new two me. Australian sound manipulators Bag Raiders have whipped up a stonking remix of Super Mal's Bigger Than Big and it's one of the best remixes I've heard in ages. I've heard the track on two mixtapes now from Australian DJs: Audageous whose mix I posted recently, and Elaine Benes (whose mix you kind find over at Sundtrak). I just wish this kind of stuff was played more often in, er, Wales.

Herve is a man of many side-projects and we've alreadybeen blessed with sweet rewards from his partnership with Sinden as The Count (see Beeper). I'd not heard of his other alter ego "Young Lovers" till I came across this fantastic track Love You Madly, from his forthcoming LP, posted over at Funkism. Can't wait to hear more!

If summer isn't officially here chronologically, its certainly here meteorologically, so we best make the most of it with some summer tunes. Buffetlibre hae struck back again with a brilliant hour-long mix packed with goodness. Absolute gold once again. See previous Buffetlibre here.

Simian Mobile Disco are coming to the infamous Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff this 3rd of May and I canne wait, especially to hear their new (ish) song 10,000 Horses Can't Be Wrong. I've also been happily revisiting their album Attack Decay Sustain Release and came across an old favourite I Believe, a track blessed with infectious bloops. I'll just post the original - I was suprised to only get my hands on a couple of remixes, neither of which are that impressive (even Switch). Any one know a good 'un?

Bat For Lashes brought out a new album called Two Suns on 6th April accompanied by single Daniel. Edwin Van Cleef has done a fine job of clubbing up the original but its faithful enough to still be a nice entry point for those who are unfamiliar with BFL...Maaah maybe I'll include an old BFL track too just because her voice is undeniably one of the most beautiful I have heard.

An Australian chap called Ben sent me a live recording of a mix he played at Shape Nightclub in Perth. I don't know much about Perth. I don't know anything about Shape. I know this is good stuff and it ticks at least a couple of my Australian-friendly boxes - Bag Raiders (tick!), Van She (tick!)...

I have a tendency to skip over Daft Punk remixes - either with my eyes when I see them in my inbox, or with my feet when they lie down in front of me in the street. There's an obvious reason why - they're often rubbish. I think we can safely say that every interesting take on Around The World has been taken and every re-make of One More Time has been made. And rarely are these track harder, better, faster or stronger than the originals (oh gaaaaawd).

Still, despite that slating paragraph, I actually quite enjoyed this snippy, choppy vocal remix of Technologic. I'm sure there's plenty of similar remixes out there, but I wouldn't know, I've been skipping over them.

Rough Genre: Dub/Pop/God I don't know
Sounds like: Changy guitar, woobly bass, a nice break from electro!

So Calvin Harris went a little bit house on us with his new single Not Alone which was pretty unexpected. But I really the like the track and the way Calvin defied a mass of greedy bloggers clamouring around trying to get their insatiable paws on his gold by ripping it from his Myspace. If you haven't heard, he popped up a slightly altered version containing frequent lyrical interruptions about his nan. Cracking. Anyhow, I assure you this Deadmau5* remix contains no grandma references. And its a glorious dubby style take on the original. Post-disco = yes!

* For those interested, the name "Deadmau5" does upset me somewhat. I've developed the habit of calling cats "maos", so as you can see, the name has brutal connotations.

Another track I heard on Skins. Think this was in the 6th episode (series 3). The tracks called Walking and its one of those guitar plucky reflective tracks that are just nice. The Dodos are pretty similar to Noah and the Whale, Rogue Wave, Ra Ra Riot - that kind of thing.

Incidently, I thought I heard of these folks before and when I heard this track Red and Purple it certainly rang a bell. So I don't know if this one's been doing the rounds on the radio circuit - if it hasn't - listen up Radio Two!
