Boys Noize in LA

Its weird how your taste in music changes over time. I picked up the A-trak remix of Boys Noize "Oh!" about 3 months ago and thought it was alright but nothing special. God knows why - I heard it again today and just thought "wow!". And I've definately been getting into more Boys Noize recently after hearing that Justice - Phantom II remix he did. Corkin' stuff. AND, now he's handing out Christmas presents! He released this Shadow Dancer remix of Shine Shine as a festive gift to us all. Bless.

Chairlift moving around

When I post music on Cassette Culture, it's obviously stuff I'm passionate about. But there's a difference between being passionate about a track and being very passionate about a track. There's tracks you see a few times, seem to get on with well and maybe take on a romantic weekend. Then there's tracks you want to marry.

I want to marry this track.

When I first heard it I was slightly startled, as I imagine you will be, by the bizarre lyrics. And to be honest a little put off by the man with the deep voice who feels he needs to echo everything in the chorus.

But nay!! These are not problems. After a few listens I was quite happily singing along about pencils and enjoying the mellow harmonies of aforementioned deep-voice bloke. This track is just so damm kool (I found it on the Urban Outfitters playlist so I guess it must be - that's a pretty kool place). Ah! Listen!

EDIT: This offer has now finished.

Hi folks, I was going to take a break for Christmas but thought I'd better alert you to this! Amazon.co.uk are giving £3 off any MP3 downloads from their new MP3 download store. There's no minimum spend and you can get some cracking albums for £3 anyway - so essentially they're free! Just enter FREEMP3S in the voucher code section when you place the order. The offer ends today and is limited to one voucher per customer.

The best ones I have found are:

The Killers - Day & Age

Justice - Cross

Air - Moon Safari

Ladyhawke - Ladyhawke

There's plenty more to choose from at the MP3 store although apart from those above, the selection of £3 albums is fairly poor. Still, if you want to buy anything its nice to have £3 off!

Amazon MP3 Store

As you can see this doesn't really stand up to Cassette Culture's usual
standards regarding image quality...
and that is because I made this myself.
It's supposed to be an anorak wearing a santa hat.

Well Christmas Eve - Christmas song I suppose. I bet Anoraak were rather chuffed to find there was a song entitled "Anorak Christmas" - so chuffed they remixed the thing. So I'll leave you with this mellow electro meandering, wish you a merry christmas (if indeed you are celebrating christmas) and see you after the big day.

A-ux

New Yorker A-ux produces cool, ambient rivers of electro, then tinkers about with metallic synths and proper electronic keyboard buzzes and warps over the top. Its really good to wind down to. Here's a couple of tracks he's generously passed on to share. Just wait till 2.15 into Journey to New Hope. Grab hold of something.

Minitel Rose

I first heard about Minitel Rose when they popped up in Sundtrak's top 10 albums of 2008. They're something a bit different; slightly quirky vocals, whistling and a generally instrument-light sound that makes a quite refreshing break when you've been listening to track in your Soundcloud dropbox by a fella called 'DJ Dan' who, lets just say, enjoys bass.

Anyway, Minitel Rose everybody! *applause*

Minitel Rose - Magic Powder

Funnily enough, I was thinking these chaps are a little like Of Montreal when I found they'd remixed Gallery Piece. Ace.

Now were pulling it back to the dancefloor. After a week or so of fairly mellow tracks and mixes, maybe we all need a bit of this. These chaps are called Goshi Goshi and that's about all I can tell you. Even the promo people don't know much about them.

Well, thats a lie, I do know that Goshi Goshi is Japanese and literally means “Scrub Scrub”. The slang implication - Asoko Goshi Goshi - means “In THAT place scrub scrub” i.e. masturbation. Excellent.

Anyway, I don't care who they are - just have a listen to this:

Sleepyhead

Passion Pit popped up on Cassette Culture tuther day when I posted the Lapse remix of their track Sleepyhead. Today I thought I'd post the video for the original track:

...and a corking remix from Wallpaper. (the period is part of the name). New York blog Finger on the Pulse held a remix competition for 'Sleepyhead' and this track was the winner.

Just a fairly nice Bloc Party poster

Bloc Party are releasing their single 'One Month Off' from the album Intimacy on the 26th January. This video was sent to me on December 12th and I've only just got round to watching it. Once again, as with Flux, Bloc Party have gone for something a bit off the wall. This ones about various nursery rhymes being destroyed by tanks, planes and CCTV cameras armed with laser beams...

And of course I'm not going to leave you without a track. Here's a mellow remix of Hunting for Witches from RAC (The Remix Artist Collective).

Telemitry in the dark

I'm a huge fan of Telemitry's remix of Bloc Party's Mercury which I posted back in August. So when this landed in my inbox I was delighted! Top stuff once again.

Sleevework

I'd not heard of Mini Viva before, and in fact their Myspace has but two tracks...both Fred Falke edits... maybe an enlightened reader can help me out on this one. I'd hate to make another blunder like this.

Anyway - the track: Its one of those slightly spaced out, upbeat songs that make you look daft on the bus when you start to shimmy 'cos you're just in the zone. I love it in the zone and this takes me there. Ah.

Super!

I have FOUR remixes for you today from a chap called Lapse from Cape Town. How have I not heard of this guy before??

First up, there's been loads of remixes of Digitalism's Taken Away, and I think this is the best one I've heard.

Digitalism - Taken Away (Lapse remix)

Now we all no I'm never going to say no to Ladyhawke. This track 'Back of the Van' first featured on Cassette Culture back in the early days of August when I posted remixes from Van She and Fred Falke. I think I prefer those to Lapse's take but its certainly not bad.

Ladyhawke - Back of the Van (Lapse remix)

I first encountered Passion Pit over at Sundrak and didn't quite know what to make of them. There's lots of synths and samples flying around and their vocals are very distinctive. Anyway, Lapse does a good number on this track 'Sleepyhead'.

Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Lapse remix)

I've heard a fair few remixes of Grum's Woah, all varying in quality (for a good 'un see Clockwork's effort here). Lapse's re-edit is a nice take although sparse on vocals which I think are one of the major strengths of the original.

La Roux

Ever since Cassette Culture hit Hype Machine, my inbox gets doused in music on a daily basis. Given the volume of e-mails, I often have to plow through a lot of stuff that isn't particular relevant to the blog (I like to think I'm open minded but please don't send in death metal) or particularly good (I'm happy to listen to people's first efforts at mixing, just don't send in mash-ups that aren't beat matched). But all this makes it so much better when I find something that's good!

I'd never heard of La Roux (maybe I should of done?) until an e-mail popped up with the video for her new single 'Quicksand'. The track is in a similar vein to Lykke Li but a bit more electro. Here be the video:

I have a track here for you to download called 'Fascination':

Sinden

Here's a stonking Sinden remix of DJ Mujava's Township Funk. I'm a big fan of Sinden - Well checking out The Count & Sinden which is a collaboration project with Herve. They came down to Cardiff a few months ago and blew the place apart. Also catch Sinden's Fabric Live mix which you can buy here.

A fan I'm assuming

This mixtapes 85 minutes of cracking tunes old and new. Its a fantastic piece of work, blending popular, often mainstream songs (e.g. Eric Prydz – Call On Me) with the less mainstream (e.g. Soulwax – Ny Lipps). Fun for all the family!

And while were here, I stumbled on this site run by the Buffet Libre chaps. If you're into remixing your own stuff check this out - they're giving away parts for loads of tracks from Cut Copy to Voxtrott. Mighty!

I'm not a big fan of Franz Ferdinand's track 'Ulysses' so when this remix popped up in my inbox I'll admit I wasn't thrilled. Turns out though this is a cheeky cracker! Dmitry Kichenko aka IMISSMYJUNO is, as far as I can tell, an unknown. From what he says, this appears to be the first track he's been proud enough to 'release'. Dmitry quite nicely describes the track as "guitars having noisy sex with synths" and I'll go with that. Its already shot into the top 50 most popular tracks on Hype Machine. See what you think:

MSTRKRFT in Paris

This is by far the best remix of MSTRKRFT's "Bounce" that I've heard. The Bloody Beetroots have whacked in a bit of vocal distrotion, beeps and a tad more bass for goiod measure. Lovely. I've been running around going "All I do is party!" all day. Which is annoying but at least I have a good reason.

Clockwork

17 year-old DJ/producer Clockwork dropped a few remixes in my inbox the other week and I thought I'd share a couple of my favourites. Clockwork did a nice job on Cut Copy's Hearts on Fire which popped up on Cassette Culture a while ago when We All Want Something to Shout For did a guest post for me. This Grum track is great and I'll never say no to New Order. There's a certainly a lot of potential here - I look forward to hearing some more adventurous mixes in the future from this guy.

Hi I just want to apologise for some of the track previews not working. Ever since Cassette Culture went up on Hype Machine I've been swamped with readers and I almost immediately exceeded my bandwidth on Fileden! I'm trying to keep the latest tracks active by shifting them around places, unfortunately I cannot afford to pay for more bandwidth so please bear with me while I try and find some free solutions. As I said, all the latest tracks should be working and all the downloads will be working fine. Hope your enjoying CC X

A Japanese Popstar working alone

Japanese Popstars have released a track called "Electric Poet" to celebrate their new album 'We Just Are'. Their gaining momentum with a eries of awards and favourable magazine reviews. Impressively, Mixmag proclaims that "they might also be the most exciting electronic act on the planet". Less impressively, Electric Circus say they are "One of the hottest electro acts to come out of Ireland recently" ...do a lot of hot electro acts come from Ireland? If you are a hot electro act from Ireland please e-mail me to correct my ignorance. Anyway, that has nothing to do with Japanese Popstars who are pretty fantastic. As well as Electric Poet, check out their remix of Spoon and Tong's "Gas Face" which you might of heard pop up in my Daft Monkey mix.

I know this track is all over the place but I had to post it as a big Metric fan. Its called "Help I'm Alive" and its really moody and melodic. Metric have a really simple quality sound thats quite refreshing and a joy to listen to. This one preceeds their 2009 album, currently untitled, which I cannot wait for.

Ah! Nooo!

Now I'm going to be quite honest and admit that I've been desperately trying not to post this track. Sometimes I scare myself with my music snobbery. A few days ago I found the notion of posting a Killers track as something quite revolting. I ain't jumping on no bandwagons I said. Well, that's a ridculous line to take when you think about because, really, there is nothing wrong with jumping on bandwagons. When you like something you like. Best off enjoying it on a bandwagon in the company of others.

Enough of wagons. This is it. The Killers - Human. Remixed of course. God I wouldn't be seen posting the original.
